Wigan have endured a period of re-finding their level over the last few years, after the Latics had performed excellently to earn promotion to the Premier League and keep themselves in the top-flight for eight successive seasons.

During their time in the Premier League, the Latics managed to reach the finals of both the League Cup and the FA Cup, winning the latter by defeating Manchester City in a shock victory at Wembley in 2013, although the club did suffer relegation back to the Championship the same season.

During the last few campaigns Wigan have found themselves struggling down the bottom end of the Championship table, whilst also battling back and earning promotion back from League One, and they are currently involved in another relegation battle this term.

For a club of Wigan’s size they have performed beyond expectations in recent times, and the Latics have had the support of many neutrals and have even had some famous faces cheering them on during that period.

Here then, we take a look at FIVE famous faces you might not have known support Wigan…

One of Wigan’s most famous supporters in none other than Richard Ashcroft, who is the lead singer for The Verve and was raised in and around the local area of Wigan, even playing junior football for the Latics during his school days, with the singer song writer having ambitions of becoming a professional player in his youth.

However, he instead went onto focus on developing his career in the music industry, and he has gone onto forge a solo career since The Verve’s spilt initial split in 1999, although the band did reunite for a while a few years later before again announcing a split in 2009.

Another famous supporter of the Latics is Sky News anchor women Kay Burley, with the presenter having been brought up in Wigan and starting out her career as a journalist as a reporter for the Wigan Evening Post and Chronicle.

Burley has since gone onto enjoy a prolonged career in broadcast journalism starting out in local radio in Teesside, before eventually progressing onto TV reporting, and she is currently the present of Kay Burley’s @Breakfast on Sky News.

Maconie is another one of Wigan’s most famous supporters, with the broadcaster, author and journalist having been very vocal over his fondness for the Latics over the years, appearing on BBC’s Football Focus back in 2010 and outlining his support for the Latics.

The journalist has been a writer for publications such as The Guardian, The Evening Standard and The Express, whilst he has also had several books published and worked as a radio DJ for BBC Radio 1, 2 Five Live and Radio Six Music.

Another member of Wigan’s most famous supporters is BBC personality Paul Rowley, who has been a life long supporter of the Latics, and he has traveled the length and breadth of the country covering the Latics over the last 20 years for the BBC.

Rowley recently revealed his fondest memories of his time covering Wigan during an interview with the club’s official website, and he will be hoping that he can see his side go onto get out of any relegation trouble during the rest of the campaign.

Perhaps not one of the most expected natural supporters of the Latics, but Mubarak was an outspoken supporter of Wigan during the 2008/09 season, when the club had both Egypt internationals Amr Zaki and Mido playing for the club in the Premier League.

Both Mido and Zaki were two of the most prominent people in Egyptian sport around that period, and so their moves to Wigan drew many of their countrymen to develop a soft spot for the Latics, and it seems that was extended all the way to their former president.
