It's looking set to be an incredibly difficult season for Bolton Wanderers, but with that comes the opportunity to make history.

The Trotters faced a 12-point deduction after going into administration last term after suffering financial difficulties.

However, Bolton have clawed back that negative points total and now have one point on the board as they look to start closing the gap on the teams around them.

Keith Hill has done an excellent job since taking over at the University Of Bolton Stadium and is currently on a run of three victories in a row as he looks to turn the club's fortunes around.

Of course a number of the players must take credit for the job that they have done so far, and no doubt they're a group who will go down in history as players who stepped up in a time of crisis.

But who are the key members of this Bolton group? We take a look at five players who are early contenders for the club's hall of fame in the future.

The goalkeeper has been a virtual ever-present for Bolton Wanderers this season.

As well as being at the club last term, Matthews has established himself as the club's number one goalkeeper and a number of impressive performances this season have started to pay dividends with points on the board.

If the 25-year-old can continue like he's started, there's no doubt that he'll be fondly remembered as the men who stayed loyal during such a difficult time.

Another player who has stuck with Bolton Wanderers through an incredibly difficult time.

After signing in the summer of 2018, Hobbs has established himself as a key player in central defence for the Trotters - a spot that he'll no doubt take back when he recovers from injury.

Hobbs could easily be playing elsewhere in the Football League, but his experience will be crucial to Bolton getting back on track.

He may only be on loan at present, but Liam Bridcutt has already made a huge impact.

The Nottingham Forest star has already been named as captain of Bolton Wanderers, and if the club can extend his stay beyond January then he may well become a true club favourite.

For now it's early days, but Bridcutt has certainly made an excellent start to his career with the Trotters.

The experienced midfielder has already made a big impact at Bolton Wanderers.

After joining the club in September, Crawford has already racked up three assists in his eight league appearances so far, indicating that he could play a big part in the success of the club this term.

At 28 years of age, the former Doncaster man is in his prime, and Bolton fans will be hoping that they can get the best out of the player during the rest of his stay.

He was almost the villain after missing his penalty against MK Dons, but Daryl Murphy is well on his way to becoming a favourite.

Three goals in six games is an excellent return for the early stages of his Bolton career, and you get the impression that his goals could be crucial for Bolton achieving their objectives moving forward.

Every club needs a goalscoring hero, and perhaps the 36-year-old can be that for the Trotters.
