The financial benefit of Wout Weghorst’s move to Manchester United has been revealed.

The Dutchman had his move to the Premier League side confirmed over the weekend.

Burnley had initially agreed a loan move with Besiktas for the striker last summer that also included an option to buy worth up to €10 million.

That loan deal was terminated following a negotiation with the Turkish giants, which led to a new deal with United over a temporary loan with no option or obligation to buy involved.

According to The Athletic, Burnley have pocketed a profit of £100,000 as part of the process.

It is understood that United paid Burnley £2.6 million for the deal, with £2.5 million of that being given to Besiktas as part of their agreement to terminate Weghorst’s stint with the club.

Burnley are optimistic that the 30-year old will be able to increase his value during his time at Old Trafford, hence why it was considered worth risking the buy option Besiktas already had in their deal with the Clarets.

Weghorst scored just twice in 20 league appearances for Burnley, having signed for the club 12 months ago.

The Verdict

Burnley are top of the Championship and have been flying high without Weghorst in the squad.

Weghorst bagged nine goals in 18 appearances in Turkey, while also playing a big role for the Netherlands during their World Cup campaign last year.

Erik ten Hag will be hoping that the Dutchman can bring a different dynamic to his in-form side as they look to earn a top four finish in the Premier League this season.

Meanwhile, Burnley will be hoping Weghorst makes an impact with the Red Devils as it could lead to a potentially quite lucrative deal for the club next summer.
