Final day heartbreak: How Burton Albion fared in 2017/18

Burton Albion suffered late heartbreak on Sunday as they were relegated to League One despite looking like they were going to complete a miraculous survival.

The Brewers took their fight for safety to the last day and it appeared like they would remain in the Championship with Bolton and Barnsley losing whilst Nigel Clough’s men were drawing with under ten minutes to play.

However, a late double from the Trotters meant Burton needed a win and they conceded a late goal to lose at Deepdale.

Whilst the manner of the defeat and relegation will undoubtedly hurt, the reality is that Burton were punching above their weight by competing in the division.

Therefore, fans can still take some heart from what they’ve seen this season and as our graphic shows there were some positives.

The standout moment was the remarkable 2-1 win at Sunderland that gave the Brewers hope and relegated the Black Cats in the process.

Liam Boyce scored the crucial goal that day and it’s important to note just how big a blow his injury was to Clough and the team. The record-signing will surely be a key figure as they look to bounce back next season.

As well as that, Lucas Akins impressed once again in the second tier with his pace and power whilst Joe Sbarra is a talented youngster that is attracting interest from Championship clubs.

Overall though it’s been another difficult season for the Brewers who only managed ten victories in this tough campaign.

The challenge will be keeping the core of this side together and looking to push for promotion next season so the underdogs can have another shot at the Championship.
