Sheffield Wednesday have endured a nightmare season, and the play-off regulars are all but out of the hunt for a third consecutive top six finish.

Carlos Carvalhal was given the boot following a string of abysmal results, and new boss Jos Luhukay has it all to do if he is to prepare the Owls for a promotion push next season.

The squad needs an overhaul, with a number of players failing to live up to their huge price tags and astronomical wages, and the Dutchman must begin to use the next couple of windows to assemble a squad capable of finally returning to the Premier League after a prolonged absence.

Starting his recruitment now is exactly what Luhukay must do, and the former Stuttgart manager would be crazy not to pursue this last-ditch transfer business this week…

Marcus Maddison

Wednesday have wingers, but have often lacked a playmaker to sit behind the front men and dictate play from the middle of the park.

Maddison has impressed since making the move to Peterborough from Gateshead in 2014, and has attracted interest from a host of Championship and Premier League clubs in the current window.

The 24-year-old has been sensational this season, with his seven goals and incredible eighteen assists helping the Posh to within touching distance of a playoff spot.

Wednesday should have money in the bank to fund a deal, and if Luhukay is backed by chairman Dejphon Chansiri to make a move, Wednesday’s attack would experience a huge boost in quality.

Scott McTominay

The Manchester United youngster has been involved in Jose Mourinho’s squad this year, but Luhukay should keep an eye on the availability of the player in the coming days.

United have already secured the signing of Alexis Sanchez, and such is the unpredictability of the transfer market, further arrivals may still occur.

With Marouane Fellaini and Michael Carrick approaching full returns the midfield will look full once again, and McTominay may find the bench on a regular basis.

Mourinho will have some thinking to do in the next couple of days, and Luhukay must be at the front of the queue should he become available.
