After their heroic Carabao Cup run ended in the week against Manchester City, Bristol City will now be totally focused on rediscovering their form in the Championship as they seek a late promotion push.

The Robins have had a fine season but haven’t won since Boxing Day and now sit just three points ahead of seventh place.

Their cup efforts can’t have helped but that’s no excuse for Lee Johnson now as he looks to get them back on track.

The manager has also had a fairly productive January, with the likes of Ryan Kent and Lois Diony arriving at Ashton Gate.

However, there are still improvements that the Robins can make and Johnson seems intent on adding to his squad before the looming deadline.

Here we look at two players who could make a big impact should they join the club in the next few days.

Marley Watkins

Bristol City have already had a bid rejected for the Norwich City man, but there’s no reason a deal still can’t get done.

Watkins, who was a target for Johnson in the summer before joining the Canaries, is out of favour under Daniel Farke who will surely sanction a sale once he has brought in his own signings.

The versatile Welshman, who can play on either wing or further forward looks as though he would be a perfect fit to the Robins side that play with high intensity.

Watkins is a hard worker, has real pace and is very direct – exactly what City need in certain games.

Brahim Diaz

Bristol City’s epic tussles with Manchester City saw them earn nationwide plaudits and one man who was very impressed was Pep Guardiola.

The boss of the Premier League leaders praised the way that Johnson’s side pressed, harried and attacked Man City over both games.

That prompted reports to suggest Guardiola would be open to sending some of his younger players to Ashton Gate to help their development as he appreciated Johnson’s style of play.

The Robins could take advantage of that this month and try to bring Brahim Diaz to the Championship on a short-term basis.

The talented 18-year old is an attacking midfielder who would be the perfect link man in this slick Robins side.

Technically gifted and capable of beating players with ease, Diaz would excel in the second tier and Johnson should make a late play for the teenager before the window shuts.
