It is understood Oyston is drawing up a shortlist of potential candidates for the vacant hotseat and wants a quick appointment.

Ferguson has made no secret of his desire to take the role on a permanent basis since taking on the caretaker role after Paul Ince was sacked in January but The Gazette report the Blackpool chairman wants to take the club in a new direction.

The Gazette understands Oyston is keen to have a new manager in place before the decision is made on players who are out-of-contract this summer.

All but five of Blackpool’s players are out of contract in June.

Ferguson hinted after the 3-0 defeat to Charlton Athletic on Saturday that his time at the club is up and intends to head back to his native Scotland:

“There are no meetings or anything planned here. I’m going home to spend a bit of time with my family. I need to sit down and think about my future” said the 36-year-old.

“I’ve done my job here in terms of keeping the club in the Championship.

“The chairman will get a bit of money now for staying in this division and good luck to him.

“A lot of the people here will now go elsewhere and kick on with their careers, and good luck to them too.

“I’m just going up to Scotland, then I’m going on holiday. I’ll take stock of what I think is right for me and see what happens.”

It is understood that Accrington Stanley manager James Beattie is not on Oyston’s shortlist despite being linked with the Blackpool job in the national press.

The Blackpool chairman is believed to be seeking advice and intends to start the interview process later this week.
