Bakary Sako’s first half strike sealed the three points for the visitors, leaving The Cottagers still to record a point and putting them one place off the foot of the table.

Magath told Sportinglife, “The message to the fans is sorry for the defeat but I can only ask for patience.

“We have a young team and I know it might be a tough beginning to the season, but I am sure we are going the right way.

“We need a win, sure. If we get three points it will build up our confidence. It’s a long season so I don’t worry about the situation now.”

Six players aged 21 and under were in the Fulham team, with Sean Kavanagh making his first team debut. £11 million signing Ross McCormack had yet another quiet game failing to produce the goods to match his price tag.
