Sunderland and West Ham United have come to an agreement which will see loan defender Frederik Alves return to the Hammers immediately.
The 22-year-old Danish centre-back signed a deal until the end of the season in the summer with the expectation that he would get regular game-time at the Stadium of Light.
Unfortunately for Alves though it never arrived as he played just three times in League One under Lee Johnson as well as six cup matches.
Quiz: Can you name which club Sunderland signed these 28 midfielders from?
Sunderland sporting director Kristjaan Speakman stressed that it was a mutual decision and not West Ham opting to recall Alves from under the third tier side’s noses, but they could not guarantee Alves the minutes he needed going forward.
The decision to terminate Alves’ loan comes just hours after Football League World exclusively revealed that Johnson is eyeing up a reunion with towering defender Aden Flint, who is currently with Cardiff City but is out of contract at the end of the season.
Many Sunderland fans have now joined the clues up and believe that the 32-year-old could be Alves’ replacement as they have been reacting to the news of Alves’ departure back to the London Stadium on social media.
Not surprised at all, makes another loan available https://t.co/tc742LLa4l

Shame it didn’t work out. But for his own career he needs a move elsewhere. And we can use up this loan slot to get another player in who will play a lot more. https://t.co/ONXSRnyfjH

Been a waste of time this lad. Was expecting a lot better from him but it hasn’t worked out for whatever reason https://t.co/f2IlBw1thR

Feel for him, but this is absolutely the right decision https://t.co/RSVm2mAkP2

Not surprised. If I’m honest what I did see of him he never really impressed me and LJ did question his attitude at one point. Also it frees up a space in the squad. https://t.co/fCmm2pkrcI

Surely we have Aden Flint or another centre half lined up if we’re sending loans back

A shame I was hoping he'd make it.

Could’ve at least given him a chance
