League One looks set to be one of the most exciting leagues around during the 2015/16 season.

Three ambitious clubs were promoted from League Two, whilst a trio of sides, who are all boosted by new permanent managers, will add to the mix of teams in League One who are fighting for promotion year after year.

Here I take a look at three sides who could be challenging for promotion based on early developments in the transfer market so far this summer.

Sheffield United

The Blades will be challenging once again purely based on the change of management that the club has decided to make.

I personally don't think Nigel Clough did a bad job but ultimately United are too big a club to not be playing Championship football.

The 2015/16 season will be the club's fifth down in the third tier but one thing new boss Nigel Adkins does know, is how to get promoted from League One.

The new boss has won promotion from the division with Scunthorpe and Southampton and that record should not be undervalued.

There is talk that Adkins wants to reunite himself with his former player Billy Sharp with whom he has worked with at both the Iron and the Saints.

Should the incoming boss pull that coup off to go with what is already a strong squad of players, it will put them in really good shape for the 2015/16 campaign.

Scunthorpe United

Now don't get me wrong on this one, I don't exactly think the Iron will be romping to promotion or even the top two during the 2015/16 season at this stage of pre-season, but with the signings they have made so far a play-off push is genuinely possible.

If Mark Robins' side can be in and around the top six come Christmas and they keep a settled side fit, they could well be the dark horses for promotion.

In Scott Laird they have signed possibly the best left-back in League One and add him to two other defenders signed from Preston North End's promotion winning team, you have a really strong foundation built from the back.

Former Barnsley midfielder Stephen Dawson has also arrived to add some steel in midfield for the Glanford Park outfit.

You feel at this stage as though Robins will still need to find 20 goals from somewhere. If he can find a proven third tier goalscorer then that play-off push become a tilt at the top two.

Wigan Athletic

The 2013 FA Cup winners were relegated from the Championship last season to signal a remarkable fall from grace.

Just two years ago, Wigan Athletic celebrated arguably their biggest day in existence when they defeated Manchester City 1-0 to lift the famous trophy.

Fast forward 24 months later and the club are about to embark on their first season back in the third tier for over a decade.

In Gary Caldwell, Wigan now have a manager who has the club running through his veins and who will do all he can to take the club back to the glory days.

Caldwell has signed three players so far and in goalkeeper Richard O'Donnell, defender Craig Morgan and midfielder David Perkins. Three players who all know League One inside out.

Much of the Latics' success next season will depend on whether they can combat the mentality that every team that faces them will see it as a 'cup final' due to their recent successes. If they can overcome that then I would expect them to be challenging.
