With the inflation of prices on players increasing each year, particularly in the Premier League, it becomes more difficult for Football League clubs to survive.

Adaptation is key and this is what Peterborough United are doing but not just to survive. They aim to get back to the Championship. FLW look at what is happening with transfers at London Road and why it could become an interesting recipe for promotion…

Peterborough Owner, Darragh MacAnthony has funded Peterborough now for a number of years, he’s had frustrations with limited crowds meaning income is difficult to come by.

As we know in football, money isn’t everything but it certainly is a big factor in determining success so Peterborough have had to made sure they can generate flows of income to not only make the club competitive but just to pay the bills.

The expectation at the club from the owner is nothing less than promotion, anything less is a failure. He also doesn’t just expect wins, he wants excitement, lots of goals.

A lot to ask for but he believes it’s the return he should expect. To get the sort of proven players who can produce these results would be very expensive so Peterborough look to the unproven and give footballers lower down the pyramid a chance.

Finding unearthed gems that can make it all happen, it’s a risky strategy but here is why it could all unfold into success come the end of the season…

Peteroborough have made millions in recent seasons from transfer sales most notably from Britt Assombalonga and Dwight Gayle raking in around £11 million for both players, showing they have the ability to find great young talents who can make an instant impact at the club.

In 2009, Gayle played for Stansted in Non-League football, following plenty of goals at all levels of the game, he is now with Crystal Palace. Ultimately deals like this are vital for providing Peterborough with a transfer fund and helping to get a team built for promotion. The current team has many similar stories to the one like Gayle’s…

Peterborough have entrusted ex academy manager Dave Robertson with the permanent job of first team manager this season after he took over in May from Darren Ferguson last campaign. His job is one of high pressure. One of his tasks will be to get more goals.

Peterborough have signed a striker from Cliftonville in Northern Ireland. Joe Gormley scored an incredible forty goals last season but it’s well known the standard in Northen Ireland is not comparable to League One.

His strike partner is Conor Washington who joined from Newport County. Washington (23) scored 13 league goals last season. A player that can create chances and is a good team player, someone who is full of energy and pace. His owner expects him to get more goals this season.

On either wings Peterborough have talent and flair. Marcus Maddison scored seven goals last season in which he was injury hit, the player loves to come inside from the right and fire shot’s in on goal, while he can be frustrating for fans, he can equally be a match winner.

On the left wing is Jon Taylor, a player I think can be one of the best wingers in the league, Taylor has great drive to his game, someone who is fast and can beat his man but also be decisive in the final third. Taylor was also injury hit last season, if Maddison and Taylor stay fit throughout the whole season this should see Peterborough improve from last season.

Peterborough also put faith in youth, Kgosi Nthle (21) is the teams regular left back, while Ricardo Santos (20) is now looking likely to partner Gabriel Zakuani (29) at the back whilst the highly rated Jack Baldwin (22) is recovering from his year long injury. These players are informed that they can move onto better things if they produce the goods which is why Peterborough look for motivated and determined characters.

They are also likely to see a dramatic rise in profit should these young players develop however it’s worth noting this strategy hasn’t always worked. Peterborough have bought players from lower down the leagues who haven’t been able to produce at a higher level including Tyrone Barnett bought for £1.1 Million who is now at Shrewsbury after a move of around £100,000. Therefore this strategy will always have risk and like most clubs, transfers will have an element of hit and miss.

It would be naive to think a completely youthful team has what it takes to get promotion over 46 games. Therefore Peterborough have made sure they have experience in the spine of the team to push the younger players on. Club Captain Michael Bostwick (27) is an experienced football league player who leads by example in central midfield. He should be partnered by Jack Collison (26) if he stays fit.

A player that if injury free should be one of the best players in the league, an astute signing from the Posh. However both will have to compete with Jermaine Anderson (19) who looks a very promising talent. Zakuani who was once captain also has many years experience as a centre back and is a leader on the pitch.

Peterborough look to have a goal threat from all angles meaning they may deliver more than just wins this season with plenty of goals and high scoring games. In addition, the more youthful players have another years experience to their belt, progression should come naturally. It also means factors like poor game management will not hinder Peterborough as much this time round, finding a balance is what every club aspires for. Peterborough may well have found this balance and return to the Championship at the third time of asking!
