In our third player spotlight we turn our attentions to Charlton Athletic and England U17's defender  Joe Gomez.

Gomez is now on the radar of Manchester City
Gomez is one to watch

Having been a major blip on the radar for many clubs in recent years including Liverpool back in 2012, the 17-year-old has constantly impressed in every game he's played during his early career and was part of the England U17 side that won the European Championships in Malta back in may.

His story began back in 2012 where it was reported that it was not only Liverpool watching him in a match against Wales U16's in port Talbot, but also Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City were keeping close eyes on the youngster  whose ability was described as ‘off the scale’. During that spell he played a crucial part in the defensive unit that only conceded one goal throughout the entire tournament.

However because he is so young, he hasn't been able to show what he can do during a full seniors team league match. That could well change during 2014 which is why he is deservedly on this list. New boss Bob Peeters vowed to make helping the youth to flourish one of his main priorites, stating “One of the main reasons I signed here was because in Belgium I was giving a lot of young players a chance; they are all now regulars in Belgium’s first division,”

He's certainly kept his word, as Charlton flew to Belgium for their pre season tournament the Phillips Stayen Cup which sees them face sister club Standard Liege. Gomez played the entire 90 minutes and thoroughly impressed in the teams 0-0 draw against Sint-Truiden on Saturday.  “I am happy man if I can bring in a young gun and if he is playing already at this level then I think he is going to be a great talent,” Peeters said in a recent interview with cafc.co.uk

So what do we know about Joe? He's 17, and has played for just about every England Youth Team in every tournament he has been able too including captaining the U17 side numerous times, he's been training and playing with the first team, been scouted by some of the most formidable Premier League clubs and played a full 90 minute match recently at ease.

He's quick, he's tall and everything a triker fears when faced with having to pass one last defender before becoming one on one with the keeper. In his holiday period he worked relentlessly on his fitness levels to show the new boss that he is ready for first team football and if needed, can play a full 90 minute game.

With Peeters' already showing signs he is fully behind the idea of turning the wonderkid into a regular starter for the Addicks if all goes to plan in 2014 and catching scout's eyes wherever he plays, Gomez is definitely one of the most exciting prospects in the league. T

he question is, does he have what it takes to maintain this impressive level of Football in one of the most competitive leagues in the world without getting injured?

FLW rating- 8.1/10

Heralded as a wonderkid from clubs across the nation, Gomez leaves a trail of smoke wherever he goes leaving both fans and scouts in awe. If he can bring the same to the Championship over a full season, he could be one of the best up and coming players in the league.
