In the league, it's been a horribly disappointing season for Reading fans, who were hoping perhaps for a push for the play offs after last seasons late disappointment.

Here's FIVE players Reading should sign in the summer

But it's been far from that and the Royals now find themselves in a bit of a relegation scrap, but have a nine point cushion over Wigan Athletic.

It's likely that they'll be in the Championship next season, but whatever division they're in, it's likely that the new Thai Owners will start investing some money into some new players.

Here are five signings that I think Steve Clarke should be looking at this summer.

Nathan Baker

The Royals have really struggled defensively this season and the central duo Alex Pearce and Michael Hector have been seriously inconsistent. It's likely that a centre back will arrive due to Anton Ferdinand's injury woes and Jake Cooper's inexperience.

Baker could help shore up the defence

I therefore think that Nathan Baker would be a super capture for the club. He's currently out of favour at Villa Park only making two appearances during this season. He's shown glimpses of a great defender over the two years before hand and could do a brilliant job at Championship level.

He'll also have only a year left on his contract at the start of next season which will means he could come quite cheap. Only 23, Baker would make a great signing for Reading.

Jason Davidson

The Aussie may have only arrived at the Hawthorns last summer, but the left back has only managed two appearances for West Brom this season.

Davidson would fill the left-back spot

Reading saw a loan offer rejected for him at the back end of 2014 by Alan Irvine, and it's currently unknown what Tony Pulis' stance on his future is.

Reading have been in need of a left back for a few years now, with Jordan Obita being played as a makeshift full back last year.

He's not shown the same form that he did last season though that saw him named player of the season, and has been pretty average this time round. It's also unknown as to whether Jure Travner will be handed a new deal at the end of the season.

Davidson was impressive in the World Cup in 2014 with Australia and had a decent season at Heracles last season, I reckon he could be a real coup for Reading.

Jamie Mackie

Whether new boss Dougie Freedman wants to keep Jamie Mackie at the City Ground remains to be seen.

Mackie joined Reading on loan last August under Nigel Adkins and had been average up until now, where he's struck an incredible run of form.

Five goals now in six games, Mackie is one of Reading's top scorers and has been vital to them in recent weeks, moving from right-winger to up front.

My personal opinion is that we should sign Mackie no matter what the cost. Steve Clarke seems to have got the very best out of him and he's been brilliant in recent weeks, winning some games single-handedly.

Jonathan Kodjia

Reading were rumoured to be going head to head with West Brom and Ajax on January deadline day to sign this guy, but they eventually signed Yakubu.

The Royals have signed Rowan Liburd

Currently the top goalscorer in Ligue 2, Kodjia is having a great season with Angers. It's important to note that West Ham's top goalscorer Diafra Sakho also came from being Ligue 2's top scorer last year.

Reading seriously need a goalscorer with Simon Cox going completely off the boil, Pogrebnyak inconsistent at best and Yakubu not quite fitting the bill, they need someone to put it in the back of then net.

We also need someone quick up top, with all three listed above extremely slow, this guy offers pace.

I'm not massively sure how much Angers will want for him, but I imagine he'll in heavy demand this summer, so we might have to loosen our purse strings to get him.

Joe Garner

Garner is a good player and has been up their with the League One top scorers for the last couple of years now.

Garner has been excellent for Preston this campaign

We all remember him for perhaps the greatest goal the Football League has ever last year, but currently League One's top scorer, I think Garner is a must sign.

It seems to me that he's a man who can score however he likes: tap ins, headers, long rangers, exactly the sort of player Reading need.

With 38 goals in his last two seasons, I think he's more than ready for Championship football.

If Reading play their cards right, they could end up with a real bargain here, as Garner's contract expires in 2016, so he could come cheap.

The only thing in their way could be that he's a Preston fan, so will he stay loyal to his club or will he choose to move on with his career?
