In the summer of 2015, Sheffield Wednesday appointed Carlos Carvalhal as their new head coach.

Stuart Gary departed Hillsborough after a 13th place finish, which saw the Owls win just two of their last ten matches.

Carvalhal was a relativity new name for English football supporters having once managed Besiktas before a stint at Istanbul BB.

After a three-year hiatus from the game, he returned to take charge of Sheffield Wednesday.

When the Portuguese coach was confirmed, there was an underwhelming reaction to the chairman Dejphon Chansiri's decision.

Sheffield Wednesday had had three mediocre seasons since their promotion from League One, so the change was one by the new owners to try and inject some life into the club to wake the former Premier League side from its slumber.

The appointment did just that.

Carvalhal guided the Owls to sixth in the division and to a play-off final, narrowly losing out to Hull City 1-0 at Wembley.

The year after, the play-offs were once again achieved with Wednesday bettering their previous season’s finish, ending the regular season in fourth.

On that occasion, however, the Owls fell at the semi-final stage. The next season Carvalhal was sacked on Christmas Eve after a pretty indifferent start to the season and replaced by Jos Luhukay.

After the initial underwhelming response, it is safe to say that the former Wednesday boss proved the doubters wrong when he guided the Yorkshire club to two consecutive play-off campaigns.

Carvalhal won 42.7% of his 131 games in charge, and how the club’s fans would love to have the man back in charge to bring the halcyon days of a few short years ago back.
