In the summer of 2017, Blackburn Rovers were busy planning their return to the Championship after a narrow relegation.

Tony Mowbray did an admirable job when he took over the reins in February after Owen Coyle was finally sacked after an abysmal few months.

Going into the final day, they still had a shot at survival but a 3-1 win against Brentford was not enough as Nottingham Forest survived on goal difference.

So, that summer, the League One rebuild got underway, but the club were shrewd.

Just over £1million was spent on transfer fees that summer, with just Bradley Dack and Dominic Samuel the only arrivals that demanded a fee.

A free-transfer arrived early doors as well, to really whet the appetite of the Rovers' fans.

This is FLW Rewind where we take a look back at a big decision made by a club, analyse the initial reaction and document what happened next.

The man in question was Cardiff City legend Peter Whittingham.

The man with a magical left foot played over 450 times for the Bluebirds scoring 96 goals and assisting 93, but now found himself at Ewood Park after being released.

He may have been 32, but the general consensus among the fans was that the midfielder still had a hell of a lot to offer, especially in League One:

But it soon became apparent that Whittingham was considerably past his use-by date.

The man who so often popped up with a goal or an assist fell victim to what turned out to be a very impressive Blackburn side, despite starting the opening game.

Having not impressed in the 2-1 loss to Southend United, he was swiftly dropped to the bench by Mowbray, only making starts when others were injured.

From December until the end of the season, he started just one game as he struggled with injury himself.

As Dack, Danny Graham and Adam Armstrong fired Rovers to an immediate return to the second-tier, Whittingham found himself finishing the campaign on zero goals and zero assists, the first time he had done so since the 2005/06 season.

Unsurprisingly, the veteran midfielder was released in the summer.
