Millwall midfielder Jed Wallace will serve a three-match ban after his appeal against his red card in the 1-0 defeat to Burton Albion was rejected, according to The Football League Paper.

Wallace was dismissed for a late tackle on Burton’s Tom Flanagan just before the hour mark, but Millwall boss Neil Harris deemed the challenge worthy enough of an appeal to the Football Association.

Brewers boss Nigel Clough agreed that the red card was harsh, but the FA have decided to uphold the decision, meaning that Wallace will be unavailable for selection for Millwall’s next three Championship outings.

The former Portsmouth and Wolverhampton Wanderers man has impressed since joining the Lions on a permanent basis in the summer following several loan deals, and his form has helped the newly promoted side to 19th position in the division.

The Verdict

Despite both managers agreeing that Wallace’s red card was harsh, the FA have decided to back referee Tony Harrington’s decision to remove Wallace from the contest, in what many feel was an extremely harsh decision.

Wallace’s tackle should be considered no more than a cynical trip worthy of a bog-standard yellow card, but the FA have remained resolute in their decision, and manager Harris will be disappointed to be without his key man ahead of a tough run of fixtures.

The decision raises questions around the appeal system within the English game, as Wallace’s offence was clearly no more than a bookable offence, yet a three-match ban has been enforced.
