The Daily Mirror (print edition 19/06, p48) have reported that Huddersfield have placed a £25 million price tag on defender Terence Kongolo.

The Dutchman initially joined Huddersfield on loan from French side Monaco in January 2018, and made his move to the John Smith's Stadium permanent summer for what was reported by the BBC to be a club record fee for The Terriers.

Kongolo has made a total of 49 appearances for Huddersfield in all competitions, but was unable to prevent them plummeting out of the Premier League last season.

Following Huddersfield's relegation from the top tier, The Daily Mail have reported that Watford and newly promoted Aston Villa are both keen on bringing Kongolo back to the Premier League next season, although it now appears that doing so will not be cheap.

So, is the reported £25 million valuation a fair asking price for Kongolo?

We put that question to some of our Football League World writers.

George Brooks

"Kongolo is a very good defender and he'd be a great signing for Aston Villa.

"He was an important player for Huddersfield in the Premier League last season and I think he will be able to make an impact at Villa Park.

"He's got plenty of experience, even though he's only played one season in the Premier League.

"He's also a good age and has three year remaining on his contract at Huddersfield.

"When you take all those things into account, maybe £25m is reasonable in today's market.

"It would be a big statement for Aston Villa to break their record twice in the same window."

Toby Wilding

"I don't see how this can be.

"Kongolo was part of a side that won just three games in a dismal Premier League season last year, so there is surely no way that top tier sides will be willing to fork out such a price in the summer.

"When you look at reports that Aston Villa could sign central defensive pair Axel Tuanzebe and Tyrone Mings - who played such a key role in Villa's promotion while on loan their last season - for £3million less than the cost of Kongolo alone, this seems almost extortionate.

"That being said, there is plenty of time left of Kongolo's contract with Huddersfield, and it seems they are desperate not to lose him, so this in a sense is a smart move from them."

Chris Gallagher

"This is extremely excessive.

"You can understand why the Terriers will demand a big fee as they spent heavily on Kongolo who was their club record signing, believed to be around £17.5m.

"But how on earth has his price increased since!? He endured a very tough season and didn't really impress as they went down in embarrassing fashion.

"Huddersfield should just look to get their money back which will still be a great fee for a Championship side."
