New Sheffield Wednesday manager Steve Bruce could make a move on his former club Sunderland to sign midfielder Lee Cattermole.

The energetic central midfielder is well liked by Bruce following their time together at the Stadium of Light, and according to Alan Nixon, Bruce could be lining up a swap deal for Cattermole.

While there is no mention of which players might be offered in any deal, the likes of George Boyd will be players who come to the forefront of Owls fans' minds, with the former Burnley man struggling to make any impression at Hillsborough.

Cattermole on the other hand would provide some extra steel in the middle of the park for Wednesday, who are currently going with the pairing of Sam Hutchinson and Barry Bannan.

The 30-year-old has played a key role in Sunderland's march at promotion this season as they currently sit third in the League One table behind both Barnsley and Luton.

Wednesday are looking for a strong finish to the season themselves after Bruce has managed to instill a bit of belief back in the squad following taking the reins from Jos Luhukay. However, consecutive draws with Sheffield United and Derby have halted their run at the top six somewhat.

The Verdict

This isn't a big money or massively inspiring signing, but he might be just the sort of player who can make a big difference for Wednesday.

Cattermole has bags of experience and on his day can really influence the midfield.

It might not turn loads of heads, but it would well be a solid move from the Owls and Bruce.
