Former Newcastle United and Crystal Palace forward Shola Ameobi is set to train with Sheffield Wednesday next week in hope of securing a contract, reports HITC.
The 33-year-old front man has spent time with a number of clubs since his release from Crystal Palace in the summer, including Huddersfield Town and Wolverhampton Wanderers, although has yet to be tied up to a new deal.
While the former Nigerian international has never been a prolific forward, he was a popular figure on Tyneside and left in 2014 after 14 years at St James’ Park, in which time he scored 79 goals in 397 appearances.
His hold up play has attracted a lot of interest from Championship clubs, but it is also worth noting that his best goalscoring season was in the Championship, when he scored 10 goals in 18 games during the 2009/10 campaign to help Chris Hughton’s Magpies return to the top-flight.
Owls head coach Carlos Carvalhal will run the rule over Ameobi next week and may offer the 33-year old a contract if he impresses, and it could be his vast experience which helps persuade Carvalhal to sign him up for the season.
Wednesday have made an inconsistent start to the Championship, winning three, drawing three and losing three of their first nine games, but they have won their last two – the latest being a 2-1 win at Brentford yesterday.
