Midfielder Gary O'Neil has revealed that he came close to re-signing for Queens Park Rangers during the summer transfer window.

The 36-year-old was a free agent in the summer after leaving Bolton Wanderers in the summer and remains a free-agent to this day, but revealed in an interview with The Portsmouth News that he came close to returning to the second-tier.

"I don’t want to hang my boots up just yet, I want to stay professional and train somewhere to show people I am still fit enough," he said.

"I was at Aberdeen for a little bit and nearly signed for QPR early in the summer, which would have been a great one in the Championship and London.

"That looked like it was going to happen, then didn’t towards the end."

In his first spell with the West London club, O'Neil racked up 33 appearances and one goal in a season-long stay before moving on to Norwich City,

In what was a difficult campaign at Bolton, he was a fan favourite, picking the up team's player of the year award at the end of the season.

QPR currently sit in tenth place in what has been a promising start to life under Mark Warburton but face a tricky trip to Fulham on Friday night following the international break.

However, a win against their west London rivals would see them jump above them and into seventh place ahead of the weekend clashes.

The verdict

I think this was ultimately a good decision from QPR in the end.

It was a summer where they needed to be thrifty and ultimately bringing O'Neil in would have been a bit of a waste of time, as harsh as that may sound.

In Geoff Cameron, Luke Amos and Josh Scowen they have three people who are as good if not better in that role than O'Neil so I think QPR got this one spot on.
