Mick McCarthy would be open to becoming the new manager of Leeds United or Sheffield Wednesday, according to the print edition of The Sun (page 63, April 22nd) via HITC Sport.

McCarthy, who recently parted ways with Ipswich Town, is available this summer and looking for a new job with a Championship club expected to be his next destination.

The 59-year-old is looking for a route back into management and could be interested by a project at either Leeds or Sheffield Wednesday if they are to sack their respective managers in the summer.

Leeds currently have Paul Heckingbottom at the helm and sit 12th in the Championship table.

But the former Barnsley man's future is in doubt at Elland Road with the fans still not warming to his tactics just yet since he replaced Thomas Christiansen at Leeds.

Sheffield Wednesday, on the other hand, sacked Carlos Carvalhal earlier in the year and appointed Jos Luhukay.

And after a very slow start, the Dutchman has finally started to turn things around at Hillsborough with a few wins to guide them to the comforts of mid-table.

But should either be sacked, former Wolves and Republic of Ireland manager McCarthy is waiting in the wings.

The Verdict

Sheffield Wednesday should keep Luhukay and see what he can do with a full summer of spending behind him. Likewise, although many Leeds fans are not particularly fond of Heckingbottom, it is harsh to judge your manager when he is working with an entirely new squad. McCarthy would be a solid but unspectacular addition for either side if they decide to appoint a new manager this summer.
