Hartlepool United have released experienced duo Andy Monkhouse and Simon Walton as boss Colin Cooper aims to rebuild his squad, writes the Sunderland Echo.
The pair have more than 750 appearances between them but they have been shown the door at Victoria Park along with youngsters Zak Boaget and Greg Rutherford.
It is believed Monkhouse and Walton were two high earners at the club and Cooper was keen to free the wage bill up as he looks to reshape his squad.
Hartlepool finished 19th in League Two this season with Monkhouse, 33 and 26-year-old Walton making more than 40 appearances during the 2013/14 campaign.
Young striker Boagey didn’t feature for Pools this term whilst Rutherford made one sub appearance.
On-loan Manchester United winger Jack Barmby, Middlesbrough’s Christian Burgess and Sunderland duo Scott Harrison and Connor Oliver have returned to respective clubs which means Cooper’s squad is down to just 17 players.
New deals have been offered to veteran defender Sam Collins, Neil Austin, striker James Pool and club captain Anthony Sweeney.
