The pair have more than 750 appearances between them but they have been shown the door at Victoria Park along with youngsters Zak Boaget and Greg Rutherford.

Hartlepool finished 19th in League Two this season with Monkhouse, 33 and 26-year-old Walton making more than 40 appearances during the 2013/14 campaign.

Young striker Boagey didn’t feature for Pools this term whilst Rutherford made one sub appearance.

On-loan Manchester United winger Jack Barmby, Middlesbrough’s Christian Burgess and Sunderland duo Scott Harrison and Connor Oliver have returned to respective clubs which means Cooper’s squad is down to just 17 players.

New deals have been offered to veteran defender Sam Collins, Neil Austin, striker James Pool and club captain Anthony Sweeney.
