Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Mike Williamson wants to extend his contract and stay with the West Midlands club next season, the club's official website is reporting.

Describing Wolves as "an exciting place to be", Mike Williamson stated his desire to pen a new deal with the Championship club.

It has been a frustrating season for the veteran defender, who has suffered persistent injuries throughout the year.

This has limited the former Newcastle defender to just four games with his last outing coming in Monday's 1-0 win over Leeds United in the absence of Danny Batth.

With Batth still a doubt and Wolves now mathematically safe from relegation, the 33-year-old is hoping for more opportunities to impress and show why he deserves a new contract.

His current deal expires at the end of this season and he will need to convince Wolves boss Paul Lambert that he is still fit and still able to perform at high standards in the Championship on a regular basis.

Williamson said:

“It’s an exciting place to be - with the new owners and the new Gaffer, I think the mentality is starting to shift and I think it will be an exciting season here next season."

The towering centre half added:

“Football itself is a shop window.

"Whether you've got a contract or you haven’t, clubs can terminate or you can fall out of favour from one game to the next - it’s all about keeping your personal standards high and for me, I’ve had a difficult couple of years.

“I feel like I’ve come out and had a couple of months of being fit and I’m looking forward to getting a thoroughly good pre season under my belt because that’s exactly what I need. "
