Cardiff City's Gary Madine has struggled to get a game for Cardiff under Neil Warnock since he signed for the club in January 2018, having appeared just 22 times in the past 22 months for the Bluebirds.

However, now that Warnock has resigned following Sunday's 1-0 defeat in the Severnside derby to Bristol City, the 29-year-old striker will be feeling that he has a chance of making it at Cardiff now.

Despite Madine being a player who could have been a favourite for Warnock over the past 22 months with his physicality and ability to score a goal off the bench, the 70-year-old manager clearly didn't fancy him and the former Carlisle United youth product found himself heading out on loan to Sheffield United for the second part of last season.

The 29-year-old put himself about during his loan spell at the Championship club and managed to score three goals in 16 appearances for the Blades as he played a part in Chris Wilder's side.

Any Championship manager may have given Madine a chance to stake his claim for their side if they had availability troubles up front, but Warnock didn't give the former Blades striker that opportunity as he was left to rot in the reserves this season.

The Gateshead-born striker will now be feeling optimistic that he can gain a place in the matchday squad for the Bluebirds for the foreseeable future, with Warnock having departed the club.

Madine will be desperate to be playing first-team football and he will have to give his all on the training pitch when the new manager comes in, to show that he is worthy of getting the opportunity to play for the club and help in their push up the table.

The experienced striker is respected within the lower levels of the Football League, and he can definitely do the job for a team in the Championship as he proved during his five months at Sheffield United.

Madine's Cardiff career could have been thrown a potential lifeline thanks to Warnock's resignation, and he will be determined to take the chance with two hands as he can begin the fight to pull on the Bluebirds first-team shirt again.
