Ian Holloway has revealed that he would be interested in the vacant Birmingham City job after Garry Monk was controversially sacked earlier this week.

The 56-year-old, who has won promotion from the Championship with Blackpool and Crystal Palace in the past, told TalkSPORT that the chance to work at St. Andrew's would appeal and he also praised the work Monk had done whilst in charge.

"I have always loved Birmingham City. I've always had a good rapport with their crowd. Monk's had a brilliant season, I've got to be honest. It's unbelievably shocking, isn't it? It can only happen in football that you can do as well as that and end up losing your job."

Blues confirmed on Tuesday evening that they had sacked Monk despite the former Leeds boss guiding the club to a 17th placed finish last season after they had been hit with a nine-point deduction following well-publicised financial problems.

Prior to that, Monk had kept Blues in the Championship and was highly regarded by the fans.

The Verdict

This would be a brave move for Birmingham as Holloway has a mixed record. Whilst he has promotions on his CV, spells at Millwall and Leicester were tough and his most recent job with QPR wasn't totally convincing.

Nevertheless, he has shown in the past he can build fast, attacking sides and that's something that the owners at Blues want.

However, the fans won't be happy if the club sacked Monk to end up with Holloway as it doesn't seem a forward step at all.

So, this would be a surprise but you can't rule out anything with the unpredictable Birmingham board!
