The summer transfer window is forever an exciting time for football fans up and down the country ahead of the new season.
If your team sign five or six players you’d expect that to be a pretty solid window - you’d be content.
Signing 20 players, yes - twenty! Might be deemed excessive. But that is what Leeds did last summer.
If you add in the four loans they picked up in pre-season, too, the grand total of players coming into Elland Road was 24.
On the flip side, 17 players left West Yorkshire on a permanent basis, with a further ten leaving on loan.
It was noted recently on the Sky Sports Transfer Talk podcast, that new Whites boss Marco Bielsa will be looking to work with a smaller squad.
You can see the sense in this - a smaller squad gives you a tighter knit, more cohesive unit.
More players could potentially cause more problems.
If you have a big ego in the dressing room and they are out of favour or not playing as regularly as they would like, there could be some dissent in the squad.
This will obviously affect the morale of the side and having a negative voice in a competitive team is not conducive to an environment in which to thrive.
Expect to see players leaving in their droves, obviously with new arrivals to follow, but at a lower rate of the 2017-18 season.
Bielsa is looking for “three or four quality signings” this summer according to Sky Sports, which would be ideal for a Leeds side who have the core of a decent Championship squad.
Quality over quantity it looks to be this summer at Elland Road, and if anyone can seduce and persuade to sign a high calibre of player it’s Bielsa.
He has a wealth of knowledge and contacts within the world game and could potentially add players who would never have been interested had it still been Thomas Christensen or Paul Heckingbottom in charge.
