Exeter City's young starlet Cheick Diabate has penned a new deal with the Grecians, extending his stay to 2023, with the option of a further year.

Diabate, who is currently on loan at neighbours Truro City, has impressed whilst gaining experience in non-league and playing at youth level for Exeter so far.

The 19-year old made his senior debut for the club in the 2020/21 campaign, featuring in the Papa John's Trophy, but quickly earned plaudits for his maturity at centre-back.

Exeter have a growing reputation of uncovering young talents, as Diabate will look to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Ethan Ampadu, Ollie Watkins or Matt Grimes.

Speaking to the official Exeter City website, Diabate expressed his delight in signing a new contract, saying: "It feels good. Signing a contract always feels good, but it's a case of still working hard and staying humble. That's the most important thing.

"This is such a good club to be at for young players, there are so many opportunities, so I'm more than happy. I left my home in South London at 16 and that was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life! To come here, do my scholarship and get a professional contract and now this new contract on top of that, its an amazing feeling. My family are so proud of me.

"I especially want to thank every coach here at Exeter City, for giving me their time; working with me all the time; and being patient with me; and wanting the best from me."

The verdict

This is excellent news for everyone involved, with Diabate showing at Truro and in limited Exeter game time that he has the potential to succeed at EFL level, and potentially beyond. It gives supporters assurance that the youngster will be committed to the club for years to come, and that the Grecians are continuing to invest in their proven youth academy.
