Blackburn CEO Steve Waggott has admitted that Josh Maja was the club’s top transfer target in the summer to replace Adam Armstrong.

All connected to the club knew that they faced a major battle to keep hold of the ex-Newcastle man, who enjoyed an outstanding campaign last time out. Such form attracted top-flight attention, with Southampton eventually finalising a swoop for the attacker.
However, Rovers failed to bring in a new attacker, with Waggott explaining to Lancashire Live that the club wanted Maja but an agreement couldn’t be reached with Bordeaux.
The CEO also hinted that a move for the striker could be revisited in January, with Tony Mowbray’s men still short on options up top.

Even though that is potentially promising news, many Blackburn fans weren’t pleased with the comments from Waggott as they understandably felt that the club had enough time to do a deal.

6 months to sort a replacement – not 6 hours !

If Maja was #1 priority as he said, why didn’t they have everything tied up as soon as Arma left. Then when they found out about his injury they could’ve moved on.
Smacks of a lot of incompetence surrounding recruitment and management of our Academy lads finding clubs on loan.

They asked Venkys a budget for spending on the recruitment department & we heard so much from Waggot & Mowbray waffle on about it but they never used it .. Venkys should hold them to account …

Will we go back in for him in January.
— Gavin Smith (@Rovers1983) September 21, 2021
Is it possible to go back for him, thought it was a joke on deadline day that it was a possibility.

Waggott is useless- we knew Armstrong was off & so should have had a potential 3-4 strikers lined up to replace him. They failed utterly in the most important job- to get a striker signed.
