Many Ipswich Town fans have taken to Twitter to react to Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson's insistence that the club are only top of League One due to the fact that they faced a weakened Bolton Wanderers side.

The Tractors Boys beat the Trotters 5-0 in August with their opponents being forced to field a number of academy graduates as a result of their financial difficulties.

Since this particular clash, Bolton have bolstered their squad considerably after being saved from the possibility of liquidation by Football Ventures Limited.

Peterborough, who are currently third in the League One standings, are scheduled to face the Trotters in December at the Weston Homes Stadium.

Following a brief slump in form which saw them suffer back-to-back defeats to Accrington Stanley and Rotherham United, Ipswich Town made a return to winning ways last Saturday against Southend United.

As a result of this triumph, the Tractor Boys leapfrogged Posh in the third-tier.

Speaking to Peterborough Today about his side's start to the 2019/20 campaign, Ferguson said: "Twenty-eight points from 15 matches is a decent return and let's not forget if Ipswich and Wycombe hadn't both played against Bolton's youth team, we might well have been top of the table."

Upon seeing the 47-year-old's comments about their club, many Ipswich fans reacted on Twitter.
