Wigan Athletic are closing in on a deal to sign George Johnston from Feyenoord, sources close to the deal have exclusively told Football League World.

FLW understands that the 22-year-old central defender will join the Latics on a loan deal until the end of the season, as the Dutch club look to give the player more game-time.

Johnston started his career in the youth ranks with Premier League side Liverpool but left the club for a new challenge in the Netherlands in the summer of 2019.

Since then the player has been a part of Feyenoord's under-21 set-up, before moving into the first team fold this season.

So far this term Johnston had made four first team appearances in the Eredivisie, but FLW understands that a loan deal has been sanctioned to allow him more first team opportunities.

Born in Manchester, a move to Wigan will see the Scotland under-21 international given the opportunity to kick on.

Johnston won't be the only new arrival heading to the DW Stadium this month.

FLW revealed this week that a deal for Wigan to sign Zach Clough is all-but complete.

The Nottingham Forest forward is out of contract at the end of the season but hasn't featured for the first team since January 2018, meaning that he's likely to be allowed to leave in order to revive his career.

The Latics will be hoping that the capture of two players of such pedigree will be able to help the club to stave off the threat of relegation.
