Derby County have confirmed the arrival of Ashley Cole on a deal until the end of the season, with Stephen Warnock amongst those believing it could be very good business from Frank Lampard.

Lampard played a number of senior games with Cole during their days with Chelsea and England, with the 38-year-old now linking up with his former teammate at Derby.

Discussing the duo linking back up together, Warnock highlighted what he felt the left-back would bring to the Derby team.

“I’ve watched a lot of the MLS and Ash is still very fit, he’s still got a lot to give,” the Quest TV pundit exclusively told FLW over the weekend.

“I think his experience going into Derby will help them.

“Defensively they are young, when you look at (Fikayo) Tomori and (Jayden) Bogle. Obviously you’ve got Richard Keogh’s experience in there, but you’ve had Max Lowe at left-back or Scott Malone at left-back, who is probably more experienced, but when you did have Max Lowe, who has gone back out on loan to Aberdeen now, you did have a relatively young back-four.

“If he comes in, he’ll add that experience, it might be just in and around the training ground to help them out, give them advise and have a calming influence in and around them.

“All round, if Ash is fully fit, which I expect him to be because he’s always looked after himself very well, I think it will be very good addition for Derby.”

Cole arrives at Pride Park coming to the end of an impressive career, with many critics sure to throw his age around as a negative.

However, Warnock is convinced that Cole will be able to make an impact even at 38.

“He’s a very, very fit guy,” Warnock continued.

“He’s always been that way, he looks after himself extremely well. Obviously he’s had bad press in the past about being a ‘party animal’ but it’s never affected the way he’s trained or played when I’ve been with him on international duty.

“I was amazed by how fit he actually is and what he can put his body through during a game.”
