Southampton are considering making an official bid for Queens Park Rangers midfielder Ebere Eze once the January transfer window opens, a source close to the Saints has exclusively told Football League World.
Eze has been one of the second-tier’s stand-out stars of the current campaign but with just 18 months remaining on his current deal, once the window opens, Ralph Hassenhutl and co are expected to test the West Londonder’s resolve.
However, with QPR currently sat in fifth place and in the midst of an unlikely promotion bid, Southampton are aware that they will likely need to pay a significant fee if they are to land the 21-year-old.
Would Ebere Eze get into Southampton's starting XI?
With 12 matches played in the season, Eze has already notched six goals for Mark Warburton’s side, with two assists also to his name.
He broke into the Rs side during Ian Holloway’s reign and has since gone on to make 77 appearances for the club, scoring 12 times and racking up seven assists.
Just last weekend he scored twice as he inspired his side to comeback from one goal down to beat Hull City 3-2 at the KCom, taking them into the play-off places.
Southampton are no strangers to dipping into the second-tier for talent, having splashed £15million on Che Adams in the summer and also poaching Angus Gunn after he had impressed with Norwich City in the 2017/18 campaign.
For now, however, Eze will be remaining focused on an exciting run of fixtures, with the Rs clashing with Reading on Tuesday night before hosting the West London derby on Monday against Brentford.
