League One is providing one of the closest promotion races around this season with arguably five teams at least capable of reaching the automatic spots come the end of the campaign.

Among the group, is Scunthorpe United in fourth position who, under Graham Alexander, are proving very hard to beat indeed this season.

The Iron's manager has put together a good squad full of players capable of keeping the challenge up and one of their summer arrivals, Cameron Burgess, has certainly played his part in the campaign so far.

I caught up with him to take a look at this year and, possibly, a World Cup spot among other things...

Cameron, what have you made of the season so far for Scunthorpe?

I think it's been pretty successful so far, we're in with a good shout of the ultimate goal of getting promoted.

I'd say maybe if we can kick on in the second half of the season and get some more good results like we've been doing recently it'll be a good end to the season for us.

Only 1 loss in the last 14 games in the league, do you think about that before games and feel that bit more unbeatable or do you just try and ignore it?

I mean it's obviously something you are aware of but I don't think it's something we really talk about too much, it's more just focusing on the next game that we've got to play and then once the game's finished we'll review it and see what we can try and do better.

So yeah, I wouldn't say it's talked about too much but you are aware of how well, or not well, you're doing.

Looking at the League One table, the top five sides have got a bit of a gap to the rest with you in fourth, does that add pressure before games and just how tough has it been this year?

Obviously we put pressure on ourselves to get results, but I think with the play-offs we're in a good spot but we want that top two spot so it's more trying to catch that and keep the pressure on them really.

So we're looking up more than looking down really.

For you now, then, the aim is top two instead of just top six...

Yeah I mean that would be fantastic if we could get the top two, obviously it's going to be tough, but we knew that at the start of the season.

If we can keep the pressure on the top two hopefully we can get some good results and catch them as soon as we can.

Individually, it's your first season at Scunthorpe, how've you found it in terms of settling in?

It's been really good.

A lot of people involved at the club help you settle in really, really quickly and we got everything done pretty early doors with the move. I mean the lads have been fantastic and there's been a few new signings this season so everyone's fit in really well and it's been good for me personally.

You had a few loans prior to your move to the Iron, is it nice for you to now have your immediate future planned?

Yeah it was a big factor in coming here.

That was a big thing but trying to get that promotion out of this league and trying to rack up as many games as I can personally as well was an important factor.

Your manager Graham Alexander played a lot of games during his career, he played in the Premier League too, what sort of advice has he given you as a fellow defender?

I think there's a lot of things you can pick up.

There's a lot about being solid at the back but I think a lot of it comes down to making the right decisions, he helps you make mature decisions, cut out silly mistakes as defenders and just be solid.

We've shown that as a team and our results have been hand in hand with that. We've played the game maturely and made the right decisions on and off the ball.

The club's made more signings during this window, do you think the manager's been a factor behind that at all? Given his playing career as well as his current work...

Yeah no doubt.

It was one good reason for me coming as well. He meets players and sees if he can fit them in on a personal level in the changing room with the lads as well so it's obviously a big factor for players and if he can pass on experience, which he has done, to some of the players then all the more better for it.

I just want to take a look at things internationally with you. You've played for the Australia U23's, dare I ask if you've thought about going to the World Cup at all?

Well I think first and foremost we need to get the manager position sorted out!

I mean I think it's a good set-up, especially for the last few years where even when you're not involved in the squad you know you're always on the radar.

There's a lot of lads now, they've increased the pool size if you like, I know they keep an eye on a lot of results and stuff like that for sure which obviously is a good thing.

You do know you're being kept an eye on which is nice. Hopefully if I can keep playing and getting good results I'll get that call-up sooner rather than later but with the World Cup they've got a decent squad as it is so I mean I won't be too disappointed if I don't make that squad, that's for sure.

Have you got to meet up with any of the senior players in the national set-up at all?

That's another thing that's quite good with the squad.

There's a lot of younger lads coming through that I've played with myself in the previous under 23 campaign that have gone on to make debuts and things so there's a lot of boys in that squad that I've met and played with.

Some of the other senior lads I've not been able to speak to or meet yet but hopefully that day comes soon.

Good luck anyway, perhaps we'll see you in Russia. Moving on to some more light-hearted questions, now, who would you say the biggest joker in the squad is?

There's a few there's always a lot of things going on but no-one will admit to what they've done so it's a bit hard to find out, if you're getting pranked, who's done it to you!

Everyone's pretty similar with that sort of thing but I know most of the lads won't go near Luke Williams that's for sure...

Dare I ask what he gets up to?

I just know that if you have a go at him he'll come back at you twice as bad...

In terms of fashion sense, who's the worst dressed in the squad?

Do you know what everyone's plays it safe because if anyone comes in with anything a little bit out of the ordinary they know they're going to get absolutely slaughtered for it, there'll be shoes missing and jackets taped up so everyone plays it quite safe.

Anyone pretty good with their dress sense?

A couple of the lads like to have a go every now and again.

Jonny Margetts likes to have a go every now and again but most of the lads are pretty straightforward with tracksuits - gear that isn't going to get battered too much.

I suppose if it's going to get taped up you don't want to wear anything too expensive...

Exactly, I think everyone's worked that out quite quickly!

Who's on the music before a game?

Tom Hopper.

He's on the music all the time; in the gym, before games, after games, half-time, he's always on it.

Finally, who's the next Graham Alexander?

I don't know if he fancies being a manager but I definitely know Matt Gilks will definitely be a coach in some respect, I know that for sure.

I reckon he's got the potential to be a manager, I don't know if he'd actually like to do it but he's always talking about results and how we need to be and so I'd say he's probably the number one candidate.
