It has been a stuttering start to the 2019/20 Sky Bet Championship campaign for Millwall, who will be looking to steer well clear of a relegation battle in the second tier this season.

The Lions endured a bitterly disappointing season last term, culminating in a 21st placed finish in the Championship table, and even though they avoided relegation, the mood around The Den was far from tranquil.

Neil Harris would have known that he had to make a host of changes over the course of the summer if his team were to start enjoying life in the second tier again. The likes of Steve Morison and Lee Gregory departed the club, but after making a host of signings in the summer, the Lions have got off to a mixed start.

They picked up seven points from their opening three league games, but have since lost three of their last five league matches and currently occupy 16th spot in the league standings.

The aim for the Lions this term will undoubtedly be to avoid relegation with ease, and start cementing themselves as a solid Championship outfit going forward.

But with fans beginning to lose patience with Harris after failing to pick up a win in their last five league games, is there a reason to worry?

FLW Chief Editor Sam Rourke spoke exclusively to former Brentford midfielder Sam Saunders, and the 36-year-old gave a verdict on the Lions' start to proceedings, as well as Harris' future at The Den.

He said: "I think his record speaks for itself at Millwall - his hands have always been a little bit tied financially compared to other sides in the Championship.

"It's a tough job at Millwall. He only has to look at other clubs like Stoke being at the bottom of the table, which shows that there are no easy fixtures in the league.

"Teams that have come up from League One have done well too, so it's a hard job for Neil. There were down near the bottom last year, so it wasn't going to be all sunshine this season.

"The league is getting stronger every year when you look at the money that's flowing around with the likes of Fulham, and the quality and wages they can afford.

"But, with the cup runs and the Championship security he has provided, I feel that Neil deserves a lot more time."
