Sam Saunders has suggested that Huddersfield Town must be patient with manager Danny Cowley following his recent appointment, in an exclusive interview with Football League World Chief Editor Sam Rourke.

After experiencing a dismal start to the 2019/20 campaign, the Terriers decided to part ways with Jan Siewert in August.

Despite being linked with moves for Charlton Athletic boss Lee Bowyer and Nigel Adkins, Huddersfield decided instead to swoop for Cowley who opted to leave Lincoln City in order to take over the reins at the John Smith's Stadium.

Although the 40-year-old has still yet to secure his first victory in charge of the Terriers, his side have illustrated some signs of promise in their recent defeats to Sheffield Wednesday and West Bromwich Albion.

During the clash with the Baggies, Huddersfield took the lead on two separate occasions at the Hawthorns thanks to goals from Lewis O'Brien and Karlan Grant before eventually succumbing to Slaven Bilic's side.

Speaking exclusively to Rourke, Saunders admitted that Cowley could go on to achieve success with the Terriers if he can get them to play like his former side Lincoln.

The former Dagenham & Redbridge midfielder said: "He's got a really good track-record and it will depend if he can get the Huddersfield boys to play in a similar way to Lincoln.

"It could take time, maybe a couple of transfer windows to sort it out.

"Yet whether he will be given as long as that I do not not know as expectations are high at Huddersfield.

"But as I say, Cowley's record speaks for itself as he managed to achieve so much at Lincoln who had no real hope before he arrived.

"So you think that he deserves a chance and I hope that the fans stand by him."

Huddersfield will be looking to seal all three points on Saturday when they host Millwall at the John Smith's Stadium.
