Former EFL midfielder Sam Saunders believes Swansea City have every chance of continuing their impressive start to the season, during which time that have been a "joy to watch".

Steve Cooper's side currently sit second in the table after a successful start to the Championship season which has seen them win five of their first eight matches, while losing just once in that time.

This comes following a summer overhaul at the club where they lost manager Graham Potter in addition to key players Daniel James and Oli McBurnie, but Cooper has still managed to mastermind a strong start to the campaign which sees them sit joint-top with Leeds United.

Speaking exclusively to Football League World’s Chief Editor, Sam Rourke, former Brentford and Wycombe midfielder Saunders has claimed that Swansea will be contending for promotion if they can maintain a level of consistency.

"When Swansea lost their manager over the summer, everyone was questioning whether they would carry on with their philosophy in how they try to play," he said.

"They have been another team like Leeds who are on that front foot playing attacking football and it’s a joy to watch. The league's taking shape now and they’re up there, but it's all about consistency. They're obviously playing with a lot of confidence and freedom, but they're going to get dips of their own throughout the season of course; it’s a long season.

"But as long as they keep the level of consistency of performances and keep that confidence in the way they want to play, them along with about ten other teams will be in with a shout for promotion."

Saunders also delivered a clear response when asked whether he thinks Swansea can continue their early season form which has seen them pick up 17 points from their opening eight league matches.

"Absolutely, why not. They are playing some good football.

"I say this in the most respectful way, he [Cooper] was a relatively unknown name when he got the job. We know what he did with England and so forth, but he went under the radar to the greater public. He's come in and hit the ground the running."
