Paddy Lane has claimed the Fleetwood Town squad are "so confident" that they can escape relegation ahead of their huge League One clash with Sheffield Wednesday this evening, speaking exclusively to Football League World.

Fleetwood are only above the relegation zone on goal difference but have a game in hand over 21st-placed Gillingham, which they play against the Owls tonight at Highbury Stadium.

It looks like a stern test for Stephen Crainey's side as Wednesday are chasing a top six place and a victory this evening would put them in the driving seat ahead of the final day of the third tier season on Saturday.

Lane looks likely to be central to Fleetwood's hopes of securing survival over the next week and will certainly be high in confidence after he was named the League One Young Player of the Season at the EFL Awards on Sunday.

The midfielder arrived at Fleetwood from non-league Hyde United in the summer and has taken the third tier by storm in his first season in the EFL – scoring five times and providing eight assists.

Speaking exclusively to Football League World at the event, the 21-year-old indicated he believed that his side would avoid the drop.

"Yeah, massively," said Lane when pressed on whether the Fleetwood squad remained confident they would stay up.

"I’ve said that throughout the season. I’m so confident in that changing room.

"We get on so well and are so close. We’re so confident!”

A win tonight would all but confirm Fleetwood's place in League One next season due to their better goal difference while defeat would still leave them outside the relegation zone heading into the final day.

Lane's side take on in-form Bolton Wanderers at the University of Bolton Stadium on Saturday while Gillingham host title challengers Rotherham United at Priestfield.
