Former Leeds United midfielder Michael Brown believes that keeping Marcelo Bielsa at Elland Road is vital for the Whites as they look to return to the Premier League.

The Argentinian enjoyed a superb first season in English football but ultimately the Yorkshire side came up short in the race for automatic promotion before losing out to Derby in the play-offs.

Despite that, the progress was clear to see, so fans were understandably delighted when it was confirmed last month that Bielsa would stay on for another year in the Championship.

And, speaking exclusively to Football League World, Brown feels the excitement is justified but also outlined the challenges facing Leeds next season.

It’s very important. Bielsa has been key to everything, bringing a positivity around the place, the professionalism, the amount of detail and how he has improved the existing players.

But, it will be a test because everyone now understands that team and the way they play, so can they strengthen? More strength in depth is needed for sure.”

Clearly new recruits will be extremely important but Brown added that having someone with the calibre of the ex-Marseille boss will give Leeds an extra edge in terms of attracting the right players.

You’ve seen the aura he’s got, I think people will want to sign for Leeds United and I think it’s a great coup.”

The Verdict

You have to agree with Brown here, this was without doubt the most important signing will make this summer.

The progress they’ve made in the past 12 months has been significant and they aren’t far from finally ending their stay outside the top-flight.

It’s now about identifying the right players and there’s no doubt that playing for Bielsa will be a huge advantage for Leeds in the market.
