We are gearing up for a fantastic end to the League One season, with four teams still realistically in with a chance of grabbing the second automatic promotion place.

Even though Luton have failed to win in their last two games, the Hatters should still comfortably win the league as they hold a five point lead over second.

However, Barnsley, who occupy that position, are only three points ahead of Charlton in fifth, with Sunderland and Portsmouth sandwiched between them - and the latter two have a game in hand.

Therefore, it really is up for grabs and you could make a case for any of the four sides to finish second.

And, Football League World exclusively caught up with former Pompey midfielder Michael Brown to get his take on the situation, and he believes the game in hand gives the Black Cats the slightest edge.

"You’re always thinking early on in the season that Sunderland would’ve gone on and won promotion, I’d have thought they’d go all the way.

"Full credit to Barnsley, they’ve performed miracles to be up the top. Portsmouth have come back, they were amazing up until Christmas then they had a terrible run after that but the Checkatrade Final win against Sunderland has given them great momentum and now they’re pushing very hard.

"It’s really tight, Sunderland have that advantage with the game in hand and they’re going to be favourites with the amount of experience, but it’s going to be interesting because it’s so tight."

It's often said that the sides who miss out on automatic promotion will suffer mentally ahead of the play-offs and Brown identified one team in the race who could be impacted by that.

"I’d be a little bit concerned for Barnsley in that situation," Brown continued."Portsmouth might be a bit more resigned for a play-off push. It’s when you drop out at the end when you’ve almost been there, that’s the one that psychologically hurts you."

All four sides are in action on Good Friday in what could be a defining day in the campaign.
