Reading FC's Jokull Andresson labelled his first-team debut as 'an unbelievable feeling', when he played his part for the Berkshire-based side in their 2019/20 pre-season campaign over the summer.

The young goalkeeper featured against the likes of Sevilla, and put in some impressive performances to make a name for himself with the Royals.

Speaking exclusively to Football League World's Jacob Potter, Andresson revealed what his emotions were after hearing of the news that he had been included in their pre-season squad for their trip to Spain.

"It's something that you never expect and as a keeper. You don't normally get that chance to feature for the first-team as most coaches want experience over youth.

"When I was told that I was going to Spain to play, my head was through the roof. I was so excited and nervous, but I just couldn't wait to play.

"The coaching staff make you feel like you belong there, not just to make up the numbers. I called my family straight away and it was an unbelievable feeling."

Andresson insisted that he did have a 'starstruck' moment, when he came up against a number of world-class players that have played at the very top of European football.

"When I was in the warm-up, I wasn't nervous. I think I was just so focused on getting ready and getting in the right frame of mind. There were a lot of fans there and I was just thinking that I need to do everything I can to not make a mistake here.

"Once I started getting into the game and I made a couple of saves, then there was Nolito and Ever Banega, it was crazy. Once I got into the game, I was loving it. I did have a bit of a starstruck moment!"

The shot-stopper issued high-praise for Reading's goalkeeping coach Jorge Baptista, and revealed that he's given the Icelander a different take on reading the game at senior level.

"I've been working more with George, and he's been teaching me so many different techniques on how I move, how I play and how I read the game.

"It's been really good and it gives me such a different view of the game, which is so important because you get to see a different outlook which can add to your game.

"They've been really helpful, as it's playing at a different level, so they've been teaching me how to reach that senior level."

The 18-year-old revealed that he wasn't expecting to have a prolonged spell with Reading when he first signed for the club, and admitted that he got off to a tough start with the Royals.

"When I first joined the club, I was not a good goalkeeper. I used to look at the other goalkeepers and see them making some great saves, whilst I was just letting all of them in.

"I was like 'Yes, I'm getting released here aren't I!'

Andresson is pleased with the direction that Reading are going in this season, and supporters will be pleased to hear that the development of the club is improving under Jose Gomes' guidance.

"There's been so many ups and downs. At the moment it's all just going up, obviously there's going to be downs at some stage, but right now the development of the whole of the club is so good.

"You'll see the younger players coming through and how good they are, it's just great to see. Hopefully it carries on!"

Reading are next in action when they take on Middlesbrough at the Riverside, where they'll be looking to bounce back from a defeat to Charlton Athletic before the international break.
