Doncaster Rovers have been motoring along nicely all season and remain well in contention to earn themselves a play-off spot come the end of the year.

Up front, John Marquis has had an excellent campaign and he was nominated for the Sky Bet League One Player of the Year award at the EFL Awards in London on Sunday.

We caught up with him exclusively at the event, then, with him having this to say, first of all, about the nomination and the campaign:

"It's been a good season.

"Individually and as a team it's gone pretty well. We've got five games to go and a lot of work to be done but on a personal level, I'm happy with how it's gone on."

Goals have been his game this year, and that is also the case for striking partner Mallik Wilks who has been in on loan from Leeds.

It's clear the pair have struck up quite the partnership, and Marquis had positive things to say about that in particular:

"I can't speak highly enough of him. He's got a fantastic attitude about him, he's really hungry to succeed and I think people forget how young he is.

"This is only his second full season in football really, he played a bit for Accrington last year and Grimsby but this is the one where he's got 30+ games and he's relished the role.

"He's taken a bit of pressure off of me in terms of scoring goals; it's always nice if you don't score that there's someone else to chip in and Mallik's been the one to do that. Along with the other forward players we've got we've managed to score a lot of goals."

And what of the top-six race? Marquis clearly feels that the pressure is going to be on the others around them if they make it to the four-team shoot-out in May:

"I think it's going to be a different sort of pressure on us to the rest going for the top six.

"I think potentially finishing in the top-six when everyone had us as one of the favourites to go down shows how much work we've put in, how much work the new manager's done and how well the new players that have been brought in have done.

"All of them things have added up to get a chance for the top-six and whoever we come up against there'll be big pressure on them as it's likely to be a Portsmouth, Sunderland or Barnsley. Then, if we get to Wembley it's a one-off thing where anything can happen."
