Exclusive: Jobi McAnuff issues verdict on Johnnie Jackson and Jason Euell’s chances of landing Charlton Athletic job

Discovery+ and Quest pundit Jobi McAnuff has backed Johnnie Jackson and Jason Euell to be successful if given the chance to take permanent charge of Charlton Athletic.

Charlton are searching for a new manager after sacking Nigel Adkins earlier this month, following a run of just two wins in their opening 13 league games of the season, that left the Addicks rooted in the League One relegation zone.

While the club are searching for Adkins’ replacement, Jackson who made well over 250 appearances for Charlton between 2010 and 2018, has been placed in temporary charge of first-team matters, with assistance from another former Addicks player in the form of Euell.

That is something that has prompted a dramatic change in fortune for Charlton. After winning 1-0 at promotion chasing Sunderland – ending their perfect home record this season – Jackson and Euell then oversaw a 4-0 thrashing of struggling Doncaster Rovers at The Valley on Saturday.

As a result, the duo have now been able to guide the Addicks out of the relegation zone, and it seems McAnuff is confident the duo could continue their good work with the club, if handed the chance to do so on a permanent basis.

Asked whether Jackson would be a good permanent appointment as Charlton manager, McAnuff exclusively told Football League World: “Absolutely. I think with Johnnie he’s obviously someone who knows the club inside out, he’s worked very very hard in supporting roles until this point.

“Obviously alongside Jason Euell, who’s been promoted and working alongside him now, I would certainly back them to be the guys to go and get them going again.

“They couldn’t have had a better start and I think when you’ve been at a club for so long you know the players inside out, that is a real head start.

“I had a similar experience at Leyton Orient at the end of last season, and you know the lads, you know how it works, you should know their strengths and weaknesses so certainly I expect them to keep picking up results.

“You normally get the bounce factor – unfortunately for one manager when he leaves – when another manager comes in whoever that is and now it’s a matter of maintaining that.

“But I certainly feel that as a combination they are more than ready to take the lead there if they are given the opportunity.”
