Portsmouth's Gareth Evans has been the star man for Kenny Jackett's side this season as they stake a strong claim for promotion back to the Championship after a lengthy spell away.

Evans was on target again at the weekend as Portsmouth beat Sunderland 3-1 at Fratton Park in a top-of-the-table clash, which would have sent out a serious statement to their promotion rivals.

It was Evans' eighth goal of the season in the league, and he will be keen to build on this excellent start to the season, both individually and as a team.

He also scooped the PFA Fans’ Player of the Month Award for November and he has shown no signs of slowing down in his impressive start to this season.

The 30-year-old revealed to Jacob Potter of Football League World that Jackett could be the man to take the club back into the Championship, outlining the qualities he brings to the team:

"He’s got a wealth of experience in terms of promotions and getting teams through the leagues so obviously he brings that to the table.

"He’s organised and he does a lot of research into the teams and gives us all the information that we need."

The attacking midfielder also revealed that the Pompey boss rarely shows signs of cracking under the pressure, with Portsmouth being the early pace-setters in League One this season:

"He’s quite relaxed around the training ground and he’s never really shown signs of pressure and seems to deal with it well and he’s been good since he came to the club."

Evans feels that Portsmouth are better equipped to challenge for promotion this season, as they narrowly missed out on a top-six finish in the previous campaign: "We had a season of consolidation last season, even though we only just missed out on the play-offs.

"Everyone benefitted from the experience of playing a year in League One and I think we’re better equipped now to mount a promotion push this season, so that’s what we’ll be looking to do."
