Gareth Evans has been the star man for Portsmouth this season as they make a serious claim to take the League One title.

Evans has eight goals to his name in the league this season and added to that tally at the weekend as Pompey beat Sunderland 3-1 to extend their lead over the Black Cats at the top of the table heading towards the New Year.

His excellent start to the season has seen him awarded with the PFA Fans’ Player of the Month Award for November, which is hugely deserved after such an impressive month for Kenny Jackett's side.

The 30-year-old has looked like a completely different player in his new role playing behind the striker, and he'll be keen to fire Pompey to promotion this season.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with FLW, Evans admitted that he prefers playing further forward behind the striker:

"I prefer playing further forward. In my career I’ve always been playing in attacking positions, so I think my forte football wise is making and scoring goals.

"I think that I’ve got an opportunity to do that when I’m playing further up the pitch like I am now."

When asked on whether he is confident of building on the impressive run of form, Evans had no doubt he can fire Pompey to promotion: "Yeah absolutely, I just need to keep staying fit and keep doing the things that I’m already doing.

"I always seem to get a few opportunities in a game and it’s just a case of concentrating, hitting the ball well, putting it in the back of the net and helping the team out with my goals."

Evans was also pleased with the progress that Portsmouth have made since he joined the club when they were in League Two, and is confident they can continue their rise up the divisions:

"It’s been good, every season has had its own bit of drama, we’ve had promotion and we’ve missed out on the play-offs last year so it’s been great since I came to the football club, but like you say, it was in League Two.

"So to see it where it is now, top of League One, is a lot of progress in a short space of time and I’m sure that’s going to continue and I’m sure it’s pretty likely at a club like this."
