Exclusive: Ex-Leeds United defender offers thoughts on Marcelo Bielsa’s ‘big signing’

Stephen Warnock believes that Marcelo Bielsa has brought Kiko Casilla in at Elland Road to help his Leeds United side over the line in the race for promotion.

Leeds have been out of the Premier League since 2004, but now have an excellent opportunity to return to the top table of English football, with Bielsa’s side in the thick of a promotion race.

January is shaping up into a huge month, with Leeds looking to boost their squad with a few astute signings.

So far, Casilla has been the only addition at Elland Road, with the 32-year-old goalkeeper arriving at Elland Road to compete with Bailey Peacock-Farrell for a starting berth.

Assessing the signing, Warnock exclusively told FLW: “He’s one of those where pedigree is good, the club he’s coming in from is very good.

“He’s going to have to be big, he’s going to have to be physical, he’s going to get knocked around from corners and things.”

Despite the arrival of Casilla last week, Peacock-Farrell retained his place in the starting line-up as Leeds lost at Stoke City on Saturday. However, the Spaniard has now had an outing for the under-23s and will be in contention to feature against Rotherham United on Saturday.

Warnock then moved to discuss Peacock-Farrell, but highlighted that he feels Bielsa has brought in Casilla to help the Whites over the line in the race for promotion.

“Bailey Peacock-Farrell has done a good job up to now, but if you want to win this league or get out of this league, you need a goalkeeper that’s going to make up points for you,” the former Elland Road left-back continued.

“I think Bailey’s made a few errors, which is expected of him because he’s young, but Bielsa’s gone back to him time and time again to put his faith in him.

“He (Bielsa) obviously feels he needs a goalkeeper to get him over the line and he probably feels that this is the signing that helps Leeds over the line.

“It’s a big signing for them, I think he’s signed a four-and-a-half year deal, so it shows their intent to him.

“I think it’s a good signing for both parties.”
