Exclusive: EFL pundit gives verdict on Luton Town’s 2021/22 play-off chances

Discovery+ and Quest pundit Jobi McAnuff says he believes Luton Town have what it takes to maintain a push for the Championship play-off places all season.

The Hatters are currently in their third season since winning promotion back to the Championship, finishing 19th – only avoiding relegation on the final day – and 12th in their previous two campaigns.

This season however, Luton have made a strong push for the play-offs during the early part in the campaign, and went into their trip to Preston on Saturday afternoon fifth in the Championship table.

A 2-0 defeat at Deepdale means that Nathan Jones’ side have now dropped to tenth in the standings, three points off the top six spots.

Have these 24 former Luton Town academy players ever played in the Premier League?

Did Daryl Murphy ever play in the Premier League?

They will however, be looking to put that right on Tuesday, when they host Middlesbrough at Kenilworth Road.

Now it seems as though McAnuff is confident that Luton will be able to continue their push for the play-offs throughout the campaign, and that Jones’ suitability to the club could have a big part to lay in that.

Asked whether he could see Luton maintaining a place in and around the Championship play-off places all season, McAnuff exclusively told Football League World:

“Yeah, I had them as a bit of an outside shout for the play-offs actually.

“I think when you look at the work that Nathan Jones has done there, I think he’s actually really done well in the transfer market over the summer.

“He’s brought some good players in recently, Fred Onyendinma has been good, obviously Cameron Jerome’s signed as well, and that’s having lost James Collins.

“So I think overall, he’s doing an absolutely fantastic job, it’s clearly a club that is very much punching above its weight, and sometimes I feel like managers and club are just meant to be.

“I certainly with Nathan Jones and his experience – and I’m not saying he’s not going to go on and manage some other clubs down the line – but I just feel like there’s something there, there’s a real connection.

“Obviously it didn’t quite work out for him up at Stoke, which was a big move, but I’m sure he’s come back with a real desire to prove himself, and I think they use that at Luton.

“They are certainly, budget-wise, way down the table, but that’s no reason to say they can’t be up where it really matters on the football pitch.

“They’ve had a fantastic start, potentially strength in depth in the squad over a long season could hinder them long long term.

“But I think there’s enough in there to maintain the push this year, and I think they’re a realistic contender for those play-off places.”
