Sol Campbell got his league managerial campaign off to a losing start at the weekend as his Macclesfield Town side travelled to high-flying Colchester United.

For sure, it was a tough ask for the new Silkmen boss to get a win against the promotion candidates and so he'll be looking for a better time against Crawley this weekend.

"It’s been a long time coming and I know he has been linked with a number of different jobs and posts but he’s not been able to get one.

"I’m pleased for him because he desperately wanted to get into management.

"It’s going to be tough for him because he’s taking on a team at the bottom of the table.

"My concern for him is that he was such a good player he now needs to adapt to players that aren’t at the level he was at. He’s got to break things down but that’ll be the sign of whether he is a good coach.

"He’s said he is one of the best minds in the game so he’s got the confidence and if he has got that belief and it can rub off on his players than that is half the battle.

"As long as he has people around him that can help him out then he might be alright. Fair play to him for not going in at the high end and if he can turn things around it has to be a step in the right direction for his coaching career."
