Sheffield United are genuine promotion contenders this season and it seems clear that they must be taken seriously.

They had a decent window, too, with Scott Hogan joining and if he can rediscover his form alongside Billy Sharp and David McGoldrick the Blades will be a real force.

We spoke to Dean Ashton, then, to see if he could do exactly that...

"I can’t imagine having to sit as a bit-part player on the bench and watching games because when you’re a striker you want to be playing.

"It must have been so frustrating for him at Villa because he didn’t get the chance to show the quality he had at Brentford and so you’ve got to be hoping if you’re Sheffield Utd he is ready and he’ll hit the ground running.

"You know that if you give him a run in the team and play to his strengths that he’ll get you goals so he could be an important signing."

Certainly, Hogan could prove a fine addition but there are plenty of options at the club already that could stand in his way.

We asked Ashton whether that could be a problem - as a fellow striker himself...

"Not really because as strikers we’re arrogant and we think we’re the best there!

"That’s the reason why you make it as a centre-forward because you have this inner confidence that you’re better than anyone else.

"It only affects you when you get left out – that’s when it can impact you – so they’ve got to go in there and show they’re good enough in training and in games."
