The hunt for a Championship place took a turn this weekend as Sunderland missed a chance to close the gap on second-placed Barnsley, once again shifting the balance of power.

The Black Cats had looked likely to overhaul the Tykes in second place, but Matt Godden's late strike for Peterborough dented Jack Ross' ambitions.

It's left Portsmouth with their destiny in their own hands once more, they know a win in their game in hand would lift them above the Tykes.

However, they face Sunderland next weekend and the Black Cats are not likely to provide easy opposition. If those two clubs share the spoils, it leaves Daniel Stendel's side look in a great place to regain their Championship status.

Quest TV pundit Dean Ashton believes of the three, Barnsley are the side that deserve the promotion most.

“It’s really difficult to call League One. All of the sides up there have been on a good run, then have fallen away and regained their form," he said, speaking exclusively to FLW.

“I think out of all of them, Barnsley perhaps deserve to join Luton in the top two, just because they have put a consistent run together and they lost their top scorer along the way.

“That can hurt a side but for them to still be right in there after that, you have to say they deserve it, but I’ve got a feeling they might just miss out.”

Barnsley host Blackpool this weekend, before concluding their season with a trip to Bristol Rovers. Sunderland visit Southend and Fleetwood as well as facing Portsmouth, whilst Pompey host Peterborough and Accrington Stanley.
