Lincoln City became the first club to secure a league title in England's top five divisions yesterday, drawing 0-0 with Tranmere to assure the League Two trophy.

The Imps have led the way for much of the season and prior to losing to Carlisle on Good Friday, they had beaten a club-record run of 18 league matches without defeat.

Their 1-0 reverse, brought about by having ten men for an hour, was the first loss they'd suffered since Boxing Day, but it only postponed their title celebrations for 48 hours.

Exactly two years after securing the National League title against Macclesfield, the fans were back on the pitch celebrating the historic title win, and Quest TV pundit Dean Ashton believes they can now hold their own in the third-tier.

“I think they can survive. Obviously the Cowley brothers keep surprising everybody with their achievements," he said, speaking exclusively to FLW.

“To get the club-record of games unbeaten shows the quality, no matter which league you’re in. It proves they can put a squad together that is very tough to beat and because they brought in some experience as well, players from League One already."

The Imps signed Cian Bolger in the winter window, adding to the likes of Lee Frecklington, Michael Bostwick and Neal Eardley, who all have experience of the higher level.

Those signings, coupled with three trophies in as many season, would delight Ashton if he were a Lincoln City fan.

“I think that’s going to give them a head start next season. I’d be really excited if I was a Lincoln City fan right now," he concluded.
